The link posted clearly disagrees with you. The Civil War affected the south tremendously and it took them a very long time to recover. Some of their guys died a horrible painful and slow death as POWs who were mistreated in prison camps and not given any medical attention for their war wounds. The southern people have a right to remember their losses and have their monuments to their fallen. Most of these men who died didn't even own slaves.

USA Today reported in May that in North Carolina alone, 35 Confederate monuments have been built since the year 2000. It’s hard to argue that those monuments are about history and heritage.
The paper also points out that Kentucky is saturated with Confederate memorials — far more than, say, Union memorials — even though Kentuckians fought for the Union by a 2-1 margin.
A recent Phoenix New Times report found that half of the six Confederate memorials in Arizona were built in 1999 or later, the most recent in 2010. The oldest of the six was erected nearly 80 years after the Civil War, during which Arizona wasn’t yet a state.

A teenager was arrested for allegedly vandalizing Boston’s Holocaust Memorial.
Police said officers responded around 6:40 p.m. Monday where they saw the suspect being detained by two bystanders.
Witnesses said they saw the 17-year-old Malden male throw a rock at the memorial, shattering a glass panel.
Photos from the scene show shattered glass on the lawn with caution tape surrounding the scene.
The 17-year-old will be charged with willful and malicious destruction of property. Police said their civil rights unit is also investigating the incident to determine if additional charges are pending.
