The next step is to compare smoking with edibles, to see if the effect is due to the THC or to the smoking.

As far as I know "all" smoking increases cardiovascular risk. That's true of clove cigarettes and mint bidis too.

I was just reading through the study, it's a good piece of data science. It begs for further studies though.
