Columbia Terminates 180 Researchers After Loss of Federal Funds

6 May 2025 ~~ By John Sexton

Columbia University hasn't been in the news as much lately. It was just shy of two weeks ago that NBC News caught wind of secret meetings taking place off campus with the goal of restoring the tent encampment for Hamas that had been set up last year.
But Columbia learned about the plans to bring back the encampment and threatened anyone who tried to do so with arrest. And just like that, the circus clowns never showed up. Not that week and not last week either. It seems like it is finally getting through to these folks that there is no upside for them, not now that the school is reacting quickly instead of negotiating with these dopes.

Meanwhile, Columbia is still dealing with the fallout from having $400 million in federal funding yanked. Today the school announced it was terminating the contracts of 180 researchers.

Sorry, but I'm not sure losing a researcher on structural racism in Puerto Rico is a great loss for science.

Commentary:
Cloumbia has a large endowment fund and lots of donor money each year by alumni plus all that tuition money. How can they be so uncaring and heartless, plus blaming others with even larger financial problems?
Additionally, those that guide Columbia University have chosen badly in their professors.
Unfortunately, they take wide-eyed high school kids, and turn them into CRT, DEI, anti-semetic and anti-American slogan-shouting robots.
That said. Cut off all federal aid, including Guaranteed Student ... Grants; or as Joey and Kameltoe put it, “forgivable loans”. We are paying for their indoctrination. Stop it.

It would be interesting to know what the fired researchers were researching

My guess that many of them will not be missed

There is no reason for us to give away money to universities. They need to pay their research departments, not us.
It's not just that the government gives our money away like Halloween candy, it's that we are broke, so we borrow the money they are giving away at high interest that we get stuck with. THAT is insanity...

A lot of the research done is small group studies. Not large group or with large impact.
Importance/impact of a study is assigned a number on a scale which is made by NIH.

An absolute cure for one of the various types of diabetes or cancers would be a high impact study....a new delivery method for established chemotherapy on a specific type and location of a rare cancer is low impact.

A LOT of studies/research projects are left incomplete or are unfinished as many require more enrollees or time. So the research is eventually terminated or re-assigned when the researcher is terminated from the position at the institution as the research is awarded to the institution and not the researcher themselves. Some of the projects will be abandoned completely....depending upon the grant status.

So....the institutions are currently laying off researchers who do pure research (largely mathematicians).

And in this economy we cannot afford pure research. Doctor-researchers need to see patients and treat them like anyone else.
Chemistry scientists need to teach classes as well as do their research projects. (They have student assistants)

SOME research is privately funded but performed by public institutions. Such as new prosthetics for amputees. The manufacturer pays the institution for researching the prosthetics use and side effects.
Pure statistical research? (Epidemiology, sociology, psychology and etc) are done rather quickly and easily. Some have clinical components that require time but customarily the data source materials already exist. (Blood/tissue samples, stool samples and etc) from other studies already performed.

Cutting off your nose to spite your face, syndrome! Seems like Trumpers dwell in it!!!

These universities only need to crackdown on these Hamas rioters to regain federal funding. It is not rocket science.
Oh with Harvard they lost over 200 Billion....
Largely over being defiant and belligerent with the Trump Administration.

Fighting the Government which is literally gifting you money is not a good idea....EVER!

Maybe the universities should act to protect their student body from these rioters and none of this would be happening.
At the last minute they did change course....too little, too late. Damage was done.

When is Civil Disobedience not civil disobedience?

What I don't like about the admin push on this is the hypocrisy that is so blatant and evident with the pardoning of the January 6th VIOLENT rioters and the mayhem and destruction they caused, was all A OK and something like this protest, that was very mild in comparison, gets the iron fist???

The 1/6 protest was very mild.

I always thought the purpose of research grants was to fund research by existing staff supervising gifted students. I made a lot of money to pay my way through college working for such professors as a student in the university. Why in the world is the American taxpayer paying for ANY university to HIRE researchers?
