Columbia Terminates 180 Researchers After Loss of Federal Funds

When is Civil Disobedience not civil disobedience?

What I don't like about the admin push on this is the hypocrisy that is so blatant and evident with the pardoning of the January 6th VIOLENT rioters and the mayhem and destruction they caused, was all A OK and something like this protest, that was very mild in comparison, gets the iron fist???

All a setup using FBI & Busloads ANTIFA bad actors. Few Trump supporters caught up and entered. Then your dirty deep state ruined 1000 lives. Many just for walking thru with a flag (weapon).

I always thought the purpose of research grants was to fund research by existing staff supervising gifted students. I made a lot of money to pay my way through college working for such professors as a student in the university. Why in the world is the American taxpayer paying for ANY university to HIRE researchers?
You are talking about "University Medical Centers".

There actually is a separation of medical centers and the universities.

The medical centers never refuse treatment on anyone especially the poor and Medicaid patients. However these places also perform a ton of research on various things. Like to create procedures for how to isolate viruses that cause pandemics.

These researchers exist under the medical center's umbrella. The medical centers employ college students to be intern doctors and intern researchers. Very very few students get into the research field. (Too high a bar of requirements and regulations)
Also some are from foreign countries here on Student visas.

All I am saying is that the taxpayers should not be on the hook to pay universities to hire researchers. All students going for their PhDs in whatever disciplines must do a LOT of research in some topic that has not been researched before. to produce an academic dissertation that passes muster for the university they are attending. They can engage other students in this process and many do. A lot of the published studies on the internet are actually the result of this kind of research.

Just as an opinion of mine....

Students and intern researchers SHOULD be in the business of duplicating existing research....to check the numbers and efficacy of previous research.

It gives them experience and validates existing research.

And previous research is often unduplicated. Sometimes the NIH funds repeat research but not very often. The problem is Usually in the details and results are often wildly inconsistent with previous research....

However, "there's more than one way to skin a cat"

Unprecedented research can encompass previous research and go beyond without duplicating the original research. Proving both hypotheses at the same time or proving one but disproving the other. It's usually a better "bang for the buck" in precious research dollars.

I have no problem with duplicate studies by different groups but I prefer that the groups be different and not from the same organization that may or may not have an agenda related to those studies. All I'm saying is doctoral dissertations are required to be unique from all others. Which of course results in a lot of very weird, even useless, studies and, because all people are not entirely ethical, often results in entirely bogus research that is inevitable among what is actually real/competent. Or the research involves such limited sampling as to be essentially meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

But colleges and universities survived for many generations on donations and their endowments and they should not depend on the taxpayers to do research now.

Terminate all education so that the wealthy corporatists have their dirt cheap labor. They'll look you square in the eye and tell you that rising wages will some magical way cause inflation while their own bank accounts grow exponentially. Such a dream this is.
Terminate all education? Okay, let's ban parents teaching their kids.:rolleyes:

Columbia Terminates 180 Researchers After Loss of Federal Funds

6 May 2025 ~~ By John Sexton

Columbia University hasn't been in the news as much lately. It was just shy of two weeks ago that NBC News caught wind of secret meetings taking place off campus with the goal of restoring the tent encampment for Hamas that had been set up last year.
But Columbia learned about the plans to bring back the encampment and threatened anyone who tried to do so with arrest. And just like that, the circus clowns never showed up. Not that week and not last week either. It seems like it is finally getting through to these folks that there is no upside for them, not now that the school is reacting quickly instead of negotiating with these dopes.
~Snip~
Meanwhile, Columbia is still dealing with the fallout from having $400 million in federal funding yanked. Today the school announced it was terminating the contracts of 180 researchers.

Sorry, but I'm not sure losing a researcher on structural racism in Puerto Rico is a great loss for science.

Commentary:
Cloumbia has a large endowment fund and lots of donor money each year by alumni plus all that tuition money. How can they be so uncaring and heartless, plus blaming others with even larger financial problems?
Additionally, those that guide Columbia University have chosen badly in their professors.
Unfortunately, they take wide-eyed high school kids, and turn them into CRT, DEI, anti-semetic and anti-American slogan-shouting robots.
That said. Cut off all federal aid, including Guaranteed Student ... Grants; or as Joey and Kameltoe put it, “forgivable loans”. We are paying for their indoctrination. Stop it.
Now we'll never know how long a shrimp can run on a teeny weeny treadmill!!! Dang it Trump!!!

NIH actually reviews and assigns new research....(yes, they are divided up in a manner to keep things honest...surprisingly)

Some projects are out for "bid" by the NIH for researchers to pick up.
IOW the NIH advertises what they want to be investigated. Or they ask specific knowledgeable people about their opinions about a specific study that is being considered.
Those "gain of function " studies is the missing link as to why some studies were taken from some researchers and handed off to some unknown others.

The "tabloid research" that is quoted so much in sensational media posts and articles usually is crap research not done in a truly scientific fashion and super small models. "3 out of 4 doctors have recommended for decades......" when the truth is those are the researchers golfing buddies....some have actually been written by a hospital Janitor with phoney credentials but quoted by Social Media as gospel truth....later stolen by a credentialed researcher and spouted by them as gospel truth...

Stay away from tabloid research....it's NEVER honest or true.

NIH has had its own problems with 'wokeness' and bogus research though. I suppose any large organization like that will have its missteps. And it no doubt has also done some good work. But if it is retained and continues to be federally funded, it should be 100% transparent and on the up and up. I'm not sure granting contracts to universities is the best way to accomplish that.
