About 2.7 million years ago we transitioned from a greenhouse planet to an icehouse planet. The transition from a greenhouse world to an icehouse world happened because plate tectonics led to both polar regions becoming isolated from warmer marine currents, the rise of the Panama isthmus & Himalayan mountains and atmospheric CO2 of 400 ppm. Conditions which still exist today. The atmospheric CO2 concentration threshold for extensive continental glaciation is 280 ppm for the northern hemisphere and 600 ppm for the southern hemisphere. The difference being the south pole has a continent parked on top of it while the north pole only has a mostly landlocked ocean parked on top of it.

So since the industrial revolution the atmospheric CO2 has risen from 280 ppm - which is the atmospheric CO2 concentration threshold for extensive northern hemisphere continental glaciation - to 400 ppm which is the atmospheric CO2 concentration at which we transitioned into an icehouse planet.

A green house planet is characterized by low latitudinal thermal gradients. An icehouse planet is characterized by high latitudinal thermal gradients and bipolar glaciation; a condition which has never existed before in the geologic record. Since the transition from a greenhouse planet to an icehouse planet there have been 33 glacial/interglacial cycles with temperature fluctuations of 8 to 12C with today's present climate being about 2C below the peak temperatures of previous interglacial cycles. Today's climate is driven by northern hemisphere glaciation because the northern hemisphere has the lower threshold for extensive continental glaciation. During the last glacial cycle one to two mile thick glaciers covered all of Canada and significant portions of the US, Europe and China.
