From my understanding there's duplicate cards so entry can be made to stage from either side. If person enters from stage left, person on stage right needs to toss his/her copy of card away and vice-versa. The only tossing I saw was Warren Beatty tossing Fay Dunaway under the bus by realizing there was some sort of mistake then turning to her and letting her run with it.

(I didn't watch live but when I saw the news I went out to YouTube. CNN description of incident was indeed hokey. So when I saw LA newspaper listed in result of my Google search, I figured if anybody should know....)
