When Trump speaks about stupid (non) solutions like building his ridiculous "wall" or "closing the border" he's just pandering to his clueless fan base spread out around the country, many of whom live nowhere near the southern border and don't really understand how it works.
It becomes a tribal thing for these people, often racial, and it just adds to the non-productive noise.

Also as you look at the map of the existing wall in red passing south (that's "down" on the map) of New Mexico, Arizona, and California, do you know how much of that barrier was already there (and has been for decades) before 2016 yet was just touched up with minor reinforcements after 2016 so Trump could con you clueless rubes into thinking his "big, beautiful wall that Mexico is going to pay for" is a REAL thing?
