In at least one WB "refugee camp" the mood is (as always) dissatisfaction with much of it aimed not at Israel but rather at Abbas and his gov't. It is easy to understand the sentiment when it is viewed through the prism of Fatah corruption and oppression but it is equally obvious that the PA is trying desperately to hang on to what remains of the Oslo Accords and to parlay it into a fully self-governing and operational Palestinian state. The schism exposes the difficulty Abbas faces in dragging his people into some sort of peaceful coexistence with their neighbors.
“If the PA is weakened further, this issue could contribute significantly to the state of anarchy,” said Khalil Shikaki, a Palestinian pollster. “This breakdown in the security situation could suddenly explode and have dramatic consequences if it is unresolved.”
