The MTBE issue was, of course, one of containment. Isn't this what it's all about- containment? MTBE worked well as an oxygenate and there was really no reason to ban its use.... until.Quelle surpise..... NOT!!!
Benzene found in Montana water supply after Yellowstone oil spill Environment The Guardian
Up to 50,000 gallons of oil spilled on Saturday from a break in a 12-inch pipeline owned by Wyoming-based Bridger Pipeline Co.
Representatives from Montana and the US Environmental Protection Agency said preliminary tests did not show cause for concern but additional tests ordered after residents complained of a petroleum or diesel-like smell from their tap water revealed the benzene.
The worst contamination of water came from idiot environmentalists, such as yourself, who forced MTBE to be used as an oxygenate in gasoline to clean the air pollution.
MTBE AND GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION
MTBE and Groundwater Contamination
Until - along came the ass-fucking farmer with ETOH.
MTBE was railroaded out of use by the Agriculture lobby and Ag state politicians in order to pave the road for ETOH.
Now they've diverted 58 million acres of arable land in order to make so MUCH ethanol that they are now DEMANDING an increase from 10% blends to 15% blends. PLUS, they are EXPORTING the shit to the tune of tens of millions of gallons MONTHLY.
Back to the issue of containment... each year, 20 million pounds of Ag chemicals are spread over our lands across this country and NO ONE bitches about it?? How's that for "containment".
And where do these chemicals end up? I think you know the answer to that one.
Containment is an issue with a substance that is as corrosive as MTBE is. However, the atmosphere itself was contaminated as well. There were many reports of people suffering terrible allergy type symptoms from the MTBE. I agree with you that ethanol as an oxygenate is incredibly stupid. I personally think that adding oxygenates to gasoline is stupid. You get less range, so have to burn more fuel. Modern engines don't need an oxygenate to burn gasoline cleanly.
It is an obsolete method of dealing with a problem that was at its peak in the 1970's.
