The man who shamelessly spent $300,000 of taxpayers’ money on food and drink has decided that indoor climbing walls at colleges and universities are not only a waste of money, but also a scourge of “epidemic” proportions. New Jersey Governor turned GOP presidential candidate Chris Christie lashed out at the athletic installations during a town hall meeting in New Hampshire late last week.

“What have I found as I’ve gone around the country? There’s a rock climbing wall epidemic going on,” he said. “There’s a rock climbing wall at Notre Dame. Two of them in fact. There’s a rock climbing wall at Princeton. I went to Iowa State. There’s a rock climbing wall there. They’re everywhere. God knows what else they’re building on these campuses that’s costing us a ton of money that we don’t know. Imagine if you saw your bill and then we had 1 percent of your tuition went to the rock climbing wall?”

He's right. Colleges are for learning not for climbing rocks. That's just a perk to entice people to attend and it costs, those costs are passed onto the students who are already over paying for their college education.

I think it's funny that 2 of the 3 schools he listed are private. And climbing walls, such as the one at Notre Dame are for classes as well as fitness. The same as the weight room, swimming pool, and student athletic centers. All part of the Rockne Memorial which includes:

• Fitness room with cardio and selectorized weight equipment
• Weight room with selectorized and free weight equipment
• Two courts for basketball and volleyball
• 10 Racquetball/handball/squash courts
• 25 yard pool and shallow exercise pool
• Activity rooms for fitness and dance classes
• Climbing wall

• Equipment check-out: towels, basketballs, volleyballs, jump ropes, dumbbells, weight belts, racquetball

We took a look at Marywood U. when my oldest was looking at schools. They had just put in a beautiful rock climbing wall. Her eyes were bugging out. It's nothing more than a sales gimmick to get more students and it jacks the tuition up even more.
