Who gives a shit if they blink? Are we finally being reeducated to seeking quality instead of quantity? The last time there was a trade backup the Chinese had to fill warehouses with a bunch of useless crap that sat and rotted in place. The same thing is going to happen again this time unless they find other countries to dump their cheap shit on.

It's already happening..... The auto garages are now calling in vendors that were nearly out of business because of Chinese competition. Snap-on, Mac tools..... And other brand names who have foolishly moved their factories over to China are being pushed aside for American made brands from local toolmakers that don't break when you put pressure on them

Channel lock, Klein tools, Leatherman and numerous others that have been considered too expensive to buy are suddenly within range.
The manufacturers that had the satisfy the EPA and OSHA and the department of commerce are now playing on a level playing Field.

Want to buy a blender that doesn't break the moment you crush ice with it? Stop buying from the companies that have moved their labor over to China and you won't have any problem. It will be easy to spot them now because the prices will go up precipitously on those items. It's highly unlikely that Walmart will swallow that whole tariff they will want to pass it along.

There will be a period of adjustment like with any addiction.... our addiction to cheap goods has not been good for us. There will be those that will cry about it..... Eat your broccoli cupcake..... It's a lot better than that vanilla frosted cake you've been living on for the past 20 years

There is factory where I live that makes autoparts and I hear they are staying busy.

I hear it not heaven there but for around here the pay is pretty good.

It's time for us to wake up and stop depending on slave labor, slave wages and wrenches that can double as chewing gum. China will discover that if they want to match American quality they will have to invest more in their factories and more in the materials they use to make them which will automatically raise the price of those goods.

It's time to go back to the 1950s and 1960s when you could buy American and depend on the quality.

People want stuff that is cheap. It allows them to have more stuff. China pays its workers very little. The US benefits from this. Americans benefit from people earning shit wages, living in polluted cities and working long hours.

And Trump has the gall to call China disrespectful...

Benefit no. We got a financial sugar high from cheap Chinese shit. By supplanting American manufacturing it reduces the tax revenue to the federal government creating inflation which then devalues the dollar. Very similar to a drug addiction. Of course one of the big problems now is that all the old American manufacturing factory buildings have been converted to condominiums. We're a decade behind in industrial construction.

But yes people do want cheap stuff there's no question about that. That's why fentanyl has become so popular.... It's less expensive than cocaine.

The problem is some things I need aren't made here. You can't find them. Example: Metal street sign sandwich boards. I can order them locally from Displays2go located in Mass. Five of them for $567 including shipping. I just ordered the same thing on Alibaba for $229 including shipping, but just got the notice that shipping has been suspended due to "extreme tariffs". This is the exact same product. Same photo. Displays2go of course orders them from China just like I do, but with a huge mark up.

I support Trump on this, but I hope his actions will cause China to drop its tariffs so I can get these signs cheap. Interestingly, Alibaba's price on the actual sign is only $12. But it normally costs $160 to ship five of them. So if I could get the same sign made in America for $40 apiece, I would do it in a heartbeat.

American manufacturing had a choice. Either specialize, like Germany, or die.

You can't blame China for having cheap labor. The US wants to be rich, you're rich and your people want to be rich too.

That's because your local manufacturer has the EPA, OSHA and the department of commerce to support. The regulations are expensive. Additionally we have a minimum wage law here which they do not have in China.

I was looking at farm tractors on Alibaba the other day. A 75 horsepower multifunctional Chinese brand with 5 ft rear wheels and all-wheel drive was remarkably under $10,000 for a brand new one.
Of course with 100% tariff that would jump to 20,000. The John Deere equivalent is about $75,000 without the attachments. So yes I understand what you're saying.

China doesn't have the cards. Trump has an unbeatable hand. But China has ambitions.
How far do we push them before they take some type of action?

I say we don't push them at all. We do whatever it is we need to do to level the playing field here and tell them with all good intentions that we can continue to trade with that we are going to protect local manufacturing. There's no need to aggravate them on purpose. If they decide to start following the same regulations that the EPA, OSHA, the FDA and the department of commerce place on american-made goods perhaps we can renegotiate.

However they will never do that.

It should be interesting to see how Walmart and harbor freight weather this storm.

Just for a bit of clarity....

When we are talking about China....that does not include Taiwan. A completely separate nation in trade negotiations.

Yes I believe Trump has already given them special considerations for their generous offer to invest billions here in North America.

But... TSMC is in trouble to the tune of billions for defying trade sanctions with CCP and selling them some high end chips used for AI.
They got a letter detailing the investigation. (Always bad news) So where they did drop the intention to invest 400 Billion in a US based facility....they still get fines for selling to the communist country.

Yes China is an ugly business beast. Li Ka Shing who was intent on selling the Panama ports Black Rock is now being threatened by Beijing. This is what Taiwan can expect should China ever take physical control of the island. Hong Kong is no longer Hong Kong it is now mainland China.

Well I'm certainly not going to argue that greed is the driving Factor behind most of the decisions that get made. Like with any other tunnel vision strategy it comes at a cost.

We had the longest stretch of low unemployment since 1969 and the cult had no idea.
They hate the same people who Trump hates and nothing else matters to these Ku Kluxxer wannabes. They swapped their sheets and hoods for red hats.
Bingo.

so you are forcing people to buy overpriced products to protect inefficient manufacturing.

Not sure how that's a good thing.

Also, don't put ice in a c heap blender, that's not what they are designed for.
