Cheap imported wine is killing California vinyards

This really makes me angry

I cant believe how stupid our politicians in Washington DC are

I know the usual globalist suspects will chime in with the Free Trade excuse

And to add insult to injury, the feds are not only allowing foreign competition to drive American farmers out of business, but Washington is in fact subsidizing the imported wine

Isnt that insane?

Can anyone here defend this globalist stupidity?

The "globalists" look at this stuff as if it were DEI so, by being globalists, everyone is equal and inclusive. Meanwhile US businesses go down the tubes from everyone being equal and inclusive.

On the other hand California wine is overpriced.
I remember when you could buy a gallon of Gallo Piasano Red Table wine for $10.00
You can still get 4L of Carlo Rossi or Peter Vella bag-in-a-box for around $15. I don't know if Gallo produces the jugs anymore. They've been trying to improve the label reputation for a long time.

I understand

Because the government is not paying the importers but rather just giving them a tax break

But “subsidy” is the most practical word to use for what happens

Depends. Some wines from Italy and Portugal are reasonable, while French wines are normally higher. What I don't like is the over pricing of California wines.

Like micro brews, there is the perception that boutique wineries somehow have more knowledge than the larger wineries. The boutique problem is that they produce as many cases in year as the larger wineries produce, in some cases, in a couple of minutes.

What you need is a good home produced wine that folk consider is at a good price and an audience that wants to buy a home American product. Imported wine is there for competition but if the government are subsidising imports, that's lunacy.

Most wine drinkers are snobs and believe that they have an inside line on what is good. The bottom line is, only the drinker can determine what is good for them.

Imported wine isn't necessarily cheap but it's still imported. It's difficult to find how much European countries charge for US wine. When you google it up all you get is whining about Trump's tariffs.

I know of one large US winery that has circumvented wine tariffs by using contract bottlers in Europe. The smart ones find ways. Wine coolers were another place that wineries have beat midwest blue laws/taxes by making malt based coolers instead of grape or pear wine bases. They are classed as "flavored beer."

I would have to go in-store and check the range.

Imported wine tends to have a UK postcode (Zip Code) on the bottle. That states the address where it was bottled in the UK because most wines are shipped over in big containers. That's why most are crap. Cheaper to do that than ship it over already in glass bottles. So if you go to another country and try the wine, it's totally different to the crap on UK shelves

Do you think the Cals are making excess profits?

It seems that the cheap imports are driving down prices

I gather that the majority of voters in California are do clueless they may not even know government is destroying an important industry in thst state
