Yes, it is giving in. At least in most instances it is not safe and/or they should always do so in front of plexiglass where possible. In other instances, one must have the appropriate amount of security. The Secret Service wasn't able to prevent Trump from being shot in the ear, this is not an easy situation to defend against even if they were incompetent.

I don't have a fraction of Kirk's experience in engaging with a hostile audience, and I even disagreed with him on something like religion. . . . but give me that mic and the opportunity, and I will pick right up where he left off.

There is no way his family could have been prepared enough for something like this.
