well what he posted was a comment and not directed at anyone. so what was his point, that an opinion is hate speech?

The point is, he's evading the point. He knows there is no justification whatsoever for Kirk's murder but he won't say so. It's easier to push the narrative that Kirk said things he didn't agree with than to condemn the shooter for murdering Kirk for saying things he didn't agree with.
