I put this in Economics because there is no "Labor" forum.
I love this part:
NPR has not independently investigated the allegations against Chavez, who died in 1993.
Of course not. But the NPR headline is not "NYT Reporter Claims that Cesar Chavez Abused and Raped Women and Girls." No. It starts out "Casar Chavez Abused and Raped Women and Girls . . . "
This is one of the accusations:
"The first time, I was manipulated and pressured into having sex with him, and I didn't feel I could say no because he was someone that I admired, my boss and the leader of the movement I had already devoted years of my life to," she wrote. "The second time I was forced, against my will, and in an environment where I felt trapped."
Both encounters led to pregnancies that she kept secret, she wrote. After the children were born, she said, she arranged for them to be raised by other families. Over the years, she has become close to those children, she said, "but even then, no one knew the full truth about how they were conceived until just a few weeks ago."
Two rapes, two pregnancies? Does that sound plausible? How fertile was she and how high of sperm count did Chavez have that this is real?
She didn't learn to stay away from him after the first time?
I cannot say this accusation is a lie. After so many years, how could any of it be proved or disproved? Waiting so long was not Chavez' choice, nor the choice of those who followed and admired him.
I'd love to find out who is actually behind these accusations. My guess is Gloria Allred or some other high-powered plaintiff's attorney who specializes in making money from accusations of wealthy men, or in this case men from organizations with deep pockets.
Chavez was left, but I have never seen anything before that indicated that he was anything but a sincere fighter for the betterment of the lives of migrant workers. He was a great American, this we know. These accusations are at least not anonymous as so many are. But they are not proven and they were deliberately kept under wraps until he was long past being able to defend himself.
