Apparently the distillery’s waste has been going to local farmers for use as cattle feed for 45 years, long enough that the farmers say they grew dependent on it.

Jack Daniel’s decided to end the program and send the distillery waste to a renewable fuel program instead.

The below video needs sad violin music to go with it.

Imagine being an adult who is willing to allow yourself to become dependent on another person's handouts to the point you would be "devastated".

Knowing how that bunch tends to be I bet they bragged it up to other cattle farmers that were not getting the handout.

I'm sure it’s just a matter of hours before a federal judge steps in to reverse this horrendously unfair decision. 😐

The cattlemen will simply jack up prices by letting their herd dwindle.

It isn't fair to other farmers who have to pay for their cattle feed, so **** him.

So they feed their poor cattle used corn? They have to eat 4X to be satisfied?

I guess buying all that feed will mean they will only be able to get a new tax write off PU truck every 4 years instead of 2. Tragic. ;)

I’m also guessing those cattle farmers were not selling their cows cheaper than cattle farmers that didn’t get the free feed.

It just means that they will either have to buy feed or reduce the number of cattle that their land will support now that they don't have the free feed.

EVERYONE getting free shit comes to expect it and demand it never stops. If it does, they ALL get angry and can't even remember to thank the hand that gave them freebies for almost half a century.

I remember when a local company had some river bottom land they would let folks put gardens on.....They decided to expand and that did away with the garden land.....You would have thought that the world had ended the way some people reacted.....Never a thought to thank the company for the free garden space they enjoyed for decades.

Monetizing a waste stream is just a sound business practice.....JD should have been charging a fee all along.

If I was a major shareholder of Brown-Forman Corp I would have insisted on it long ago.

What next. Resturant slop and vegtebale cuttings in 55gal trash cans will be removed free to hog farmers?

Maybe the cattlemen and the whiskey distillers can collaborate and come up with a beef-flavored whiskey?

Then they would be more committed to working with each other?

My understanding, is that Jack Daniels, has now entered into an agreement with an energy producing company, wanting to use their waste, to produce methane or diesel, at a profit to the energy company, so the energy company pays Jack Daniels for liquid/solid waste, making it a profit center, on their waste product. This is an example of vertical integration for a profit, in the manufacturing process. I guess the farmers, (who were not paying for the waste) will have to find a way to feed their own cattle, without an ongoing free subsidy from this manufacturer, that is trying to show a profit, to it's shareholders, as is the American way.

When I worked for DuPont I was in charge of getting waste shipments (mostly automotive paint waste sludge) sent out to be disposed of.....Every 53' trailer that went out was near a million in disposal costs.

Then a guy figured out that we could make a rough primer for dumpsters and such out of the sludge. It was butt-ugly but tough as nails.

We went from an average of one shipment of waste a month to one every six months.

At first we sold the primer at cost and when it took off were were getting almost half what "clean" automotive primer would cost per gallon.

We turned what was a costly waste stream into a very profitable primer product.

Did you feel the same way about Cliven Bundy? Remember him, wasn't he dependent upon something "free"?

But yeah, it is hard to feel bad for this farmer. Hundreds of cows? I mean I caught the rake on his tractor, he is raising hay. But that byproduct is grain. And he ain't milking those cows, he is just raising them to get them to market, as cheaply as possible, and free grain is a huge competitive advantage.
