I'm not really finding a need to use either word on a yearly basis.
The only time I use "gypsy" is when talking about my grandmother
being chased by them in Northern Wi. when she was 7. A train engineer
stopped his train and got her on the train before the abduction.

Not a problem, even among libs.

we have gypsy cabs, sports stars like wrestling legend Gypsy Joe, and lib singers crooning on about "Gypsies Tramps and Thieves"

The word "Gypsy" is fine, the only thing you'll get any heat in America over is referring to the Gypsy people as "Gypsies".

why gypsy, but not gypsies?

the German word Zigeuner is no longer pc in Germany.
You must say "Roma und Sinti"

how is it in the US?
In the UK, I've just heard gypo (or "gippo"). Apparently it's now supposed to derogatory, but around these parts, we've just always used gypo.
