The rank and file protestors I have seen don't exactly get paid in a formal sense. They do however, get a free bus ride, which is different from the past. They also get boxed lunches. The lucky ones get to stop at a restaurant for a free sit down meal. A lot of college students are recruited thru a tight grapevine. They are itching to do this stuff and jump at the chance.

The higher ups get paid formally. These are people who manage these affairs, such as coordinators in organizations like MoveOn.org. A few a liberal academics from universities. Some are labor leaders, among others.
