Zone1 can one still say Sioux?

or must one say Lakota etc?

We still say Sioux.

The tribe which I believe my father came from is called Flandreau Santee Sioux.

This sign sits in front of the tribal office today.

The town I was born in is still called Sioux Falls.

All the signs next to the river still say Big Sioux River.

so it is politically correct!

where does the rumour come from that one must say Lakota etc
.

Lakota is a word in their language, as also are Dakota and Nakota. I think they all mean, basically, us, or the people.

Yes, to anyone but a white liberal.

And most of the "Native Americans" I've ever met refer to themselves as Indians.

Many will call out to me, "Grandma", a respectful term they will use for a female elder.

I love finding a younger Indian who is selling flax roses. I used to have quite a collection of them.

Good to know!

I suppose one can also say Eskimo and must not say Inuit 😊

Depends on who you talk with. In the Canadian Football League was a team called the Edmonton Edmonton Eskimos. A bunch of people started whining and they changed the name to the Edmonton Elks. I don't know anyone who calls them the Elks.

In 2020 pressure mounted from team sponsors such as Belairdirect, Boston Pizza, and Sports Interaction, a First Nations–owned betting company, for the team to change their name. The term Eskimo is a term historically placed on Inuit. The team officially dropped all use of the word "Eskimo" from the team on July 21, 2020. In response, the team temporarily rebranded as the "Edmonton Football Team" or, secondarily, the "EE Football Team", confirming their plan was to rebrand with a nickname starting with "E" to continue the use of at least some of their branding, most notably the interlocked double-E logo. This move was supported by multiple Indigenous groups, including the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, a group representing over 60,000 Inuit across Canada. On June 1, 2021, the team formally announced that the new Edmonton team name would be the Edmonton Elks, a name used by the Edmonton football club of 1922.

Eskimo is not a bad word!

15th post
what would they say?
On May 14, 2009, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education approved a motion directing UND to retire "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo, effective October 1, 2009, with full retirement to be completed no later than August 1, 2010. This directive was to be suspended, if, prior to October 1, 2009, the Standing Rock and Spirit Lake Sioux tribes gave namesake approval consistent with the terms of the Settlement Agreement. Spirit Lake voted to keep the name but the Standing Rock tribal counsel would not allow a vote to take place. On April 8, 2010, the Board unconditionally ordered UND to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname at the end of the 2010–11 season.

As you can see Standing Rock didn't let their people vote because the result would have been keep it and that's not what they wanted. What you have is a bunch of people, maybe 10%, who want these names changed because they consider them offensive. The teams that have these kind names picked them because of their warrior and fighting associations.

If there was no internet these name changes wouldn't happen because no one would hear the minority whine about it. The minority can talk the loudest and the Sheep that lead listen.
