Some of the favourite drums beaten by Democrats concern same-sex marriage and "equal opportunity" for women. Well, the latter up to the point where they might want to run for President.

But it seems one must choose between being a Mormon or being a true-believing Democrat:

A popular Mormon podcaster who supports gay rights and the ordination of women was excommunicated by the church this week. He is the second high-profile church member to be excommunicated in the past year.

John Dehlin, 45, confirmed his excommunication from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints on Tuesday. He said he had refused to back down from his support of same-sex marriage and the ordination of women, or stop expressing misgivings about key tenets of the religion on his “Mormon Stories” podcast.

Now what's our resident closet Democrat-from-Utah to do?

What IS he to do???

The webistes and blogs and media outlets here are ablaze with thousands of postings, maybe tens of thousands by tomorrow.

John Dehlin had to choose between his personal beliefs and silence or confronting what he believed were the doctrinal and cultural misgivings of the LDS Church in his mission to explain "Why I Stay".

What is ironic is that his podcasts probably kept far more doubting Thomases in the church than the leadership has in Salt Lake City in the last few years.

One of the General Authorities, an acquaintance of mine, reportedly said, "Dehlin can't question the church on doctrinal matters in public. We may be wrong but will go ahead with this."
