The rare attempt by a state government to broker the sale of privately-owned infrastructure reflects its growing concerns over protecting fuel supplies in the most populous U.S. state and keeping a lid on prices, where California's nearly 28 million drivers already pay among the highest prices for gasoline in the country.

California's effort to save the refinery from closing also marks a shift from the focus of government policy in recent years to champion green initiatives and restrict fossil fuel usage, that has led to an often tense relationship between the state and oil companies, including the second-largest U.S. refiner by capacity.

The state's primary energy and policy planning agency, the California Energy Commission (CEC), has actively sought buyers for the plant, three sources told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations.

I am totally amazed at the stupidity of the state.

66 and Valero finally said "screw you" and Valero is considering shuttering it's Wilminton plant. These places run on shoestrings (gasoline is about as pure a commodity as you can find).

When these places finally do shut down, the coast is going to be paying 6-8/gallon or go on gas rationing.

All due to unfavorable approaches to the industry.

You get what you ask for.

Maybe Newscum can pull 400,000 BPD (a barrel is 42 gallons) out of his oversized ass.

Combine weird formulation requirements and add in massive taxes on the price per gallon, and Californians are going to get more of what they voted for.

. . . almost makes one wonder if there will be a market for black market gas shipped in from Idaho.

Might be a business opportunity there for pirates and smugglers.

Shit..Idaho gas prices are pretty high also..7th in the nation, last I looked.
BTW...Idaho has zero refineries.

Because it's probably easier to ship in finished products on demand than ship in crude and ship any excess refined products out.

What the left wants is a shortage of fossil fuel that forces consumers to buy electric or ride the bus

Hey, it's works well for Norway. There are still tons of ways to produce energy without fossil fuels being the major one. But you domestic terrorists, traitors and convicts prevent from happening.

I don't believe they EVER had a refinery.

So, yeah.

Montana has several.

Do you know the thread premise...? Moron.

It's about the STATE of California trying to keep a huge refinery OPEN.

The state essentially was so unfriendly to refining, refiners said, fine.....go get it somewhere else.

The state looked at it and realized that they have nowhere near the supply, capacity, or infrastructure to replace that.

BTW Stupid: LA is six times the size of Norway.

The state is eight times the size of Norway.

Please think before posting.

Let's hear it lefties.

The Camelot of crap (California) is now trying to find a buyer for the Valero refinery.

To do that, they'll likely provide incentives.

Valero will sue their asses off.

Let's hear it Old Rocks (in the head).

What gives?

Why are you guys not screaming at CA.

This is what you want....right? $10/gallon gasoline so that all the cheap renewable can replace the gas (even though there is not enough).

No private company is going to buy a refinery in California. The regulations are unbearable, and the refinery gets vandalized by eco-terrorists on a regular basis, which of course in California carries no penalties.

15th post
California has outlawed gasoline powered automobiles effective in a few years, no? Why would Valero or anyone else want to invest money in a refinery there and just have to ship it out of state in a very short period of time?

Shocker, another revenue stream is bailing out of California.

Just wanted to point out that Norway has the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world funded by oil and gas extraction. It is about to top $2T if it hasn't already.
