Over the years the conservatives have had to make Hitler and fascism into something different from conservative, so how about liberal? The conservative opening came with the word-Nazi and national socialism.
Historians have long told us that Hitler used the socialist word to gain power, and once in power the long knives came out and the socialists were gone.
But, even during Hitler's rise to power, many Americans didn't believe Hitler, as some seem to do today.
Here is a quote from a 1933 Time magazine just as Hitler is beginning his rise to power:
"Essentially National and patrioteers, the Nazi insert Socialist into their party's name simply as a lure to discontented workers."
Now with all that history behind us and all the scholarly tomes written of Nazism, how can some Americans believe they can make Nazism into liberal? How stupid a people are we?
