No! I don't think they are on average poorer than Mississippi.... on average gross income they are about the same, but in the UK benefits in healthcare, 28 days mandatory vacation pay, maternity paid leave 39 of 52 weeks leave are paid at 90%, college education benefits and mandatory housing benefits for poor and middle class are much better than in Mississippi.
It really can't be compared by just salaries imo.
