This tragic incident happened in Sudan on July 27 2016. There were UN aid workers some of them British women working in South Sudan. They were supposed to be protected by a detachment of UN soldiers from China. But when the women were assaulted and raped by South Sudanese militias, the Chinese soldiers ran away leaving the women at the mercy of violent militia.

On July 17, two armed soldiers in uniform dragged away a woman who was less than a few hundred meters (yards) from the U.N. camp's western gate while armed peacekeepers on foot, in an armored vehicle and in a watchtower looked on. One witness estimated that 30 peacekeepers from Nepalese and Chinese battalions saw the incident.

In the latest clashes in Juba, residents of the U.N. camp accused peacekeepers of running away when the camp was shelled. Two Chinese peacekeepers were killed.

Later on Indian Army was called and they rescued these women and other UN aid workers.

When they arrived at the compound, about three kilometres from the UN base, about 150 shots were fired by the attackers using automatic weapons. The peacekeepers responded by firing warning shots into the air which caused the two groups of attackers to flee.
It is estimated that about 40 offenders were involved in the incident. The humanitarian workers were successfully evacuated from the compound unharmed as the gunfire continued.
