My wife had previously claimed asylum because she was part of a church that was oppressed in China. The government agreed and granted her asylum. Her case was still pending when we got married. (Even though they should be resolved in 180 days, some people have been waiting for up to ten years for their cases.)

We applied for a relative sponsorship after we married, and it was approved within weeks. Our immigration lawyer was impressed how quickly it went through.
