Its not hard to trap people in depositions, so lawyers always advise their clients to tell the truth.
You ask questions that you have evidence for, but they arent aware of it. You sit them down and grill them with a thousand questions for 6 hours, and if they lie one time and you can prove it, they go to prison. They wont know which questions are traps, and since they have immunity, its MUCH safer to just tell the truth.
This is also how you know if a terrorist being waterboarded is telling the truth. You ask him some questions that you already know the answer to. If he lies at any point, you keep waterboarding him. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise, torture works very well when its properly organized.
