Beginning at the American Legion Bridge near Cabin John, Maryland, Route 1 follows the western shore of the Potomac River before crossing Key Bridge in Washington, DC. Route 1 then follows the eastern shore of the Potomac with the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Memorial to the east and Rosslyn to the west, avoiding prohibited airspace, and crosses Memorial Bridge, a compulsory reporting point (see figure 2).5 At this point, the maximum allowable altitude on Route 1 is 200 ft above mean sea level (msl).
