Being at the wrong altitude a few hundred feet out from the landing strip, in the dark, in a crowded airspace, with pilots concentrating on a challenging landing is….well…..problematic. As we have seen.
Its been reported the helo was well outside it's prearranged flight path by half a mile.
Seems like if hele was looking into the lights to west it would have seen plane. These are not blinding spotlights . Ordinary city street lights. No skyscrapers in DC. We’ve all looked out windows when landing. Anyone blinded? Go to Mt Tam outside SF and look back at a real big city lights from 500’ elevation. Not blinding.
That landing was very routine. The area around the airport is so concentrated that everything is hundreds of feet apart at all times. The only issue as far as navigation is concerned was the altitude of the helicopter. That certainly brings into question the helicopter pilot and traffic control.
Even so, the altitude was the only threat. Again, everything in that area is so concentrated that there is very little room for horizontal maneuver. But with the added dimension of altitude the horizontal becomes less relevant. Like automobile traffic with unlimited vertical.
Most likely some in depth exchanges between her and her family that would appear troublesome with the current situation

How would that be when the helo was in the direct path of the RJ because the helo was a half a mile out of their designated flight path and above their assigned ceiling limit.
So a helo, directly in the flight path because they deviated from their assigned route, by half a mile is not a factor?
There isn’t even a half mile between land masses there. Look at a diagram of the flight paths. That helicopter followed the water all the way as it headed back south. Very standard. The only anomalous element that created a crash scenario would’ve been altitude.
