Being arrested by a government and then released is not grounds for political asylum. People like you have forgotten that it is POLITICAL ASYLUM, not economic asylum or religious asylum. Your wife violated Chinese law by choice. Not a wise thing to do in a totalitarian country unfriendly to western religions. She was allowed to leave so she wasn't being persecuted very much. People in China who offend the government either get a bullet in the skull or spend years or decades in "reeducation camps".

Third, - wait for it - China imprisons less people than the US does, despite being "Communist" and having five times as many people as we do.

Fourth, asylum is not limited to politics. We also offer asylum to people who are oppressed for their religion.

Fifth, the only reason she got a tourist visa was because she has family here.

Now, all that said, perhaps if we had our stuff together, they'd have called bullshit on her claim seven years ago and we'd have never met.
