to get my current job I had to undergo two background checks (once as a contractor, again when brought on full time), a drug test, a review of my financials, and they questioned multiple coworkers and former bosses.

To sponsor my wife for immigration, I had to pay $4000 in fees and applications and submit 200 pages of documentation.

To get a mortgage, I had to account for every bank account and loan that I've had in the last 20 years.

To get a FOID card (in supposedly tough-on-guns Illinois) I had to pay $11.00 and fill out one form.
