This is a very interesting look at 1975, as seen through the movies Hollywod was making. The documentary (narrated by Jodie Foster, who I thought did a great job) looks at the relationship Hollywood movies had with what was actually happening in society. This was the rise of the disaster movie, loss of trust in government, Blaxploitation, the blockbuster, women's rights, and a war between "old Hollywood" (John Wayne, Frank Sinatra, and others) pushing back to some of these films (most notably Hearts and Minds at the Academy Awards that year, which won). There were confrontations backstage. That documentary I have seen and very much recommend.

While this documentary pays some attention to Nixon and Ford, in the final 20 minutes it focuses on the rise of Reagan, who left as Governor of California in 1975 with great ambition, and how he created a culture that ushered in an era of patriotism and love of country that ignored most of what 1975 was exploring. I have not seen most of the movies that are featured, although I'm now interested in a few of them.

Jaws ushered in an era of the blockbuster, and the era of independent films would soon end, with corporate America reclaiming Hollywood.

I watched 20 minutes or so till I gave up. I wanted to like it, I thought the premise might be interesting.
But as usual, Netflix can't stop, well... being Netflix.
They changed timelines to make it appear a film represented an event.
The political bias is as obvious as the morning sun.
It framed a ridiculous argument that Ronald Reagan's rise in patriotism made the public want dumb movies. And went on about how negative Reagan was to the movie industry - as if the American people changed their attitudes about movies because who is President

You only watched 20 minutes, the segment about the rise of Reagan coincided with his political ambitions at the end of 1975 to 1976. So you didn't even see it, because you found yourself triggered in the first 20 minutes.

Wow - you are correct, I watched 1:09 of it. I didn't believe I watched that much of it.

I don't normally do documentaries, but I'm gonna try to check this one out.

It is pretty good till it starts trying to say Reagan getting elected ruined movies. Which was weird
Well, Presidents can be massively influential on the country and the culture, as we're currently witnessing right now.

Not a far-fetched idea at all.

It never said any such thing, that was just your incorrect perception of this documentary.

It's kind of like the movies themselves, they often say different things to different people.

I've seen every movie mentioned in this documentary. Every one of them is awesome and holds up well despite the passage of so much time.

Yes it absolutely did.
Literally use those words? No, but a child over the age of 6 can see that was the message.

"Look at this!! Before Reagan, we were making so many meaningful films and TV shows! Expressing important problems in America!! Reagan gets elected and WHAM!! Now all people want to see is stupid, mindless movies! -- GRRRR!!!!"

You don't see that, then it is only because you don't want to.
