Khomeini rose to power as a direct consequence of Western actors (including the US) empowering what was once a figurehead monarchy into an 'absolute ruler' who consolidated his own power by crushing political dissent and adopting authoritarian policies against his own country.

Neither were particularly 'good' guys, but we tolerated the Shah because he was favorable to OUR interests.

I am not convinced. The Shah had officials who did some bad things but compared to Khomeini he was very good.

Khomeini imposed a very hardline strict faith driven form of government and immediately the executions commenced. All one needed to be executed was just working in the government of the Shah.
