According to a 2025 investigative report by
ProPublica,
Trump obtained two mortgages for neighboring homes in Palm Beach, Florida, in the 1990s that utilized a practice he now labels as criminal:
- Dual Primary Residences: In late 1993 and early 1994, Trump signed two separate mortgage agreements for properties adjacent to Mar-a-Lago, swearing in both instances that the home would be his "principal residence".
- Rental Usage: Despite these claims, records and interviews indicate Trump never actually lived in either home; instead, both were immediately marketed and used as rental investment properties.
- Terms Misrepresentation: Claiming a property as a primary residence typically allows borrowers to secure more favorable loan terms and lower interest rates than they would for investment properties.
President did same thing his administration is now calling ‘mortgage fraud’ in case against Fed governor Lisa Cook
