Borne by inflation, college tuitions are rising even faster. Yale University, at which the cost of tuition, room and board has jumped $10,000 every four years during the last decade to $70,000 in 2019, totaled more than $80,000 in 2022.
The price is well above what the average American household earns. To be sure, the costs of running the schools also increased 5.2% last year, the most since the turn of the century. Yet, while half of students receive some form of financial aid, the galloping price is fueling discussions of what a four-year degree, especially from elite Ivy League schools, is worth.
