Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It often uses fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, blast beat drumming, and unconventional song structure.

During the 1980s, certain thrash metal bands formed a prototype for black metal. This so-called "first wave" included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost. A "second wave" arose in the early 1990s, mostly of Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. This scene developed the black metal style into a distinct genre.

Black metal has been met with great hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian standpoint of many artists. Moreover, a handful of musicians have been linked with church burnings, murder or National Socialism. For these reasons and others, black metal is often seen as an underground form of music.

I obviously don't condone the burning of churches, but the realism these guys brought to their music is unlike anything else before/after it! In fact I'm even in the midst of a book right now, detailing the entire rise of Black Metal, along with the criminal acts that took place. That book is: Lords of Chaos. I was lucky enough to receive it for X-mas, from my girlfriend. If this thread arouses your curiosity, I'd suggest picking it up!

I've been a fan of Black Metal for years. Some of my favorite artists include: Venom, Mercyful Fate, Mayhem, Darkthrone & my all-time favorite, Immortal! I also enjoy Blackened Death Metal, which favors a lot of the subject matter in which Black Metal was always known for, mixed with elements of both Black & Death Metal. The bands in that sub-genre that I enjoy are: Behemoth, Belphegor, Goatwhore & even Skeletonwitch, who have elements of Thrash in their music too.

Discuss!

All of the songs were OK until they started the vocals.

Sounds like they're gargling a rusty chainsaw infected with VD. In your face vocals are ok, but they're just trying to mask their inability to sing. The instrumentals have nuance and highs and lows. The vocals should as well.

Not my cup of tea, but to each their own.

Some interesting things about it, some pretty good guitar work in some of it.

I found most of it way too repetative and caught in a limited framework.

I will never understand why people think their music cant stretch boundries.

Rock has been here and done this.

I cant understand the lyrics and that always hampers my appreiciation of a tune.

I can listen to this type vocals and even appreciate it to some extent but I can never decern the lyrics.

I also have problems with the overt silly tough guy spikes and black leather bullshit.

It always (along with most other costumes for stage) just strike me as teenage angst props.

Understandable. The aesthetics are not to be taken too seriously, at least by me they aren't. It's all in good theatrics/fun. As for the music itself, it's an acquired taste. Thanks for taking the time to put in your two cents as well.

Tool are the best of this type of music.

They have amazing guitar skills and are such gifted composers that you will see string quartets playing their tunes.
