Black Mass James "******" Bulgar

Interesting side note...when I last lived in Boston I had the top floor of a 3-Decker on Washington Street in the Lower Mills section of Dorchester. One of ******'s burial grounds was a vacant lot where the Florian Hall used to stand before it burned down. That vacant lot was literally a hundred yards from my living room windows. If memory serves me, I think they put three bodies in that spot.

He was a scary person for sure.

LOL...what's "scary", Drifter is I managed Jillian's...a bar down by Fenway Park and would typically be headed home about 4 in the morning. I would drive right by that vacant lot and then park right there on the street. If they were out there and thought I saw something? I probably would have gone in the hole too.

His eyes look like a cold blooded killer. The movie did not glamorize the gangster this time. In other movies it almost seems like the crime boss is cool, not in this one, he seemed like a horrible psychopath.

****** was warped right from when he was a kid. He was supposedly doing tricks as a male prostitute out of some of Boston's gay bars when he was a teen. Then he started doing bank robberies when he was in his early twenties which he got busted for and sent to Alcatraz. When he came back to Boston after his prison stretch he went right back to crime.

His brother on the other hand went to college, got a law degree and went into politics. They were kind of a Ying -Yang thing.

You know what's weird though, Drifter? In the movie they spent a lot of time showing ****** with his kid? I don't remember him even having children. He always had multiple girl friends and treated all of them pretty much the same...which is to say...pretty impersonally.

I learned more from you about ******'s youth then I did from the movie.

When he eventually went on the lam he originally left with one of the three women he was dating...only to have her drive him crazy so he brought her back to Boston and took Catherine Grieg instead. Which is ironic because it was her who ended up getting him caught.

Well, that's telling something about the movie, I suppose. :D

He was a horrible person and I remember my dad hanging around horrible people like that when I was young living in las vegas. I can't stand people like that.

The movie focused alot of the killings ****** and Stephen Flemmi did, so it had a lot of kill scenes and then mostly focused on the FBI agent that always wanted to cover for ****** and who seemed to hero worship ****** for sticking up for him against bullies when they were kids. It didn't make sense that he would forever love ****** so much they never flashed back to their childhood so it was just said that's the reason. Again it was interesting because it's based on a true story and in spite of my friend hating the makeup job on Depp, I thought depp did a good job anyway and the cast was pretty good. I just felt it really didn't give a story where I felt any understanding of why it all happened.

They left out a lot of stuff from the movie that surprised me. Like they put in the part about him horning in a winning lottery ticket but they didn't talk about how he strong armed the couple who owned the package store they were using as their headquarters. ****** and Steve Flemmi went to the couple's home...told them they wanted to buy the store. The couple said it wasn't for sale. Steve Flemmi puts a gun and some pictures of the couples kid's getting off the school bus on the table. The couple sells the store.

The reason it was always so hard to nail, ****** and the rest of his guys is that there were basically only four of them and they didn't sell drugs or run gambling or prostitution. What they did was terrorize the criminals who did and extort money from them. It was either pay ****** or you ended up dead.

And the bad guys were too scared to go after ****** because he had two of the cities most notorious hit men as his partners. John Martarano killed dozens of people. What's amazing is that with the plea deal he worked...that guy is out on the streets already.

Do you know how much time John Martarano served?

I think it was a ten year sentence. Both he and Kevin Weeks are out walking around Boston as we speak.

Because they squealed on ******. ****** was who they wanted. These guys were probably just "small time" to them.
