Not for the sake of opposing change, my friend. Traditional views and values are born of hard experience. They are not arrived at by ignorance, but by knowledge. This is the essence of the conservative view. It is the lives and deaths of our ancestors. Our mothers and fathers, their mothers and fathers, and back to the mists of time. Our heritage. They were born into a mean world, and they fought through the best they could. On their way, they learned lessons about human nature, about what works and what doesn't, about the world. They have passed that on to us, if we will listen to their wisdom. We tune them out at our peril.
Right now, I am listening to a song, Simple Man. It is a remake. It giving me the goosebumps. It is a mother passing what she has learned on to her son. She tells him, be a simple kind of man. Listen closely to what I say. If you do this, it will help you some sunny day. Oh, take your time. Don't live to fast. Troubles will come, and they will pass. You'll find a woman, and you'll find love. And don't forget that there is Someone up above. And be a simple kind of man. Be something you'll love and understand. Follow your heart, and nothin' else.
Why? Maybe because mother has learned that being a complicated sort of man is not worth it. She has seen the pain that comes with that, and she wants her son to avoid it.
These are the ashes of our fathers, and the temples of our gods, Hagbard Celine. This is how we honor our past, and this is how we forge toward a true future. This is conservatism.
