Happens all the time. I personally know someone who did just that. (As to how weak the case was: he was facing 6 years in prison and got...3 years probation.) In his case, it was less about the prospect of conviction and more that the DA said she would put his son (then 11 or 12) on the stand and "give him nightmares for fifty years."

All guilty pleas for deals are false. People just plead guilty because they are totally innocent but don't want to risk a trial.
