Let's review the two times that an incumbent president dropped out during a race.

1968 with LBJ and 1952 with Harry Truman.

LBJ is a particularly telling example. He dropped out after losing New Hampshire. A lot earlier than Biden did. He was succeeded by Hubert Humphrey, who barely lost to Richard Nixon (a human scumbag, by your standards.)

Same thing with Harry Truman. He dropped out, was replaced by Adlai Stevenson, who lost handily to Eisenhower.

Nixon (the first time), Humphrey, Mondale, and Gore were all "winning" running mates, but they all flubbed it when they came up to bat themselves.

The ideal time for Biden to have dropped out was in 2022. He didn't do that, and we got the result that we will all regret.
