Apparently you don’t understand the term “free market capitalism”. American corporations are free to protect themselves.

The government cannot protect internet users from every cyber threat out there. Utilities are part of the national security infrastructure and as such, must be protected by government.

One of the hospitals in Toronto was recently attacked by ransomware but they were able to spot the attack and immediately shut down all of their computers and locked the hackers out. They rebooted slowly department by department so the hackers couldn’t find another way in.

The pipelines that have been compromised, were those whose owners were simply too fucking cheap to protect themselves from ransomware.

The big Toronto law firms I worked for did manual back ups every night. In the event of a ransomware attack they could just shut down clean out and restore from the previous days back up.
