37 out of 40 convicts in federal prisons, sentenced to the death penalty, will now be given the chance to live out their lives in prison, thanks to a new move by Joe Biden.
Biden said he was guided by his conscience and other things. He said we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.
More than 130 civil and human rights groups penned a letter to the president in early December calling on him to commute the sentences of "all individuals on federal death row."
"The only irreversible action you can take to prevent President-elect Trump from renewing his execution spree, as he has vowed to do, is commuting the death sentences of those on federal death row now. Your ability to change the course of the death penalty in the United States will be a defining, legacy-building moment in American history," the letter said.
Also urging Biden was Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del. Coons, a close confidant of Biden, who said that he had urged the president to take action, to take away the the penalty to dozens of death row inmates. Coons said "it says domestically and to the world about our values if we were to go ahead and execute all of these individuals, rather than have them spend the rest of life in prison."
So now having hear from Biden, 130 civil and human rights groups, an Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del let's see what USMB members have to say about this rather extreme action by Joe Biden.
Yay or Nay ?
