Slavery was the reason the South seceded. It was not the main reason why Lincoln wanted to preserve the Union.

I think the history of those Units should be preserved.

Sadly they were a lot like us today. Both sides use the Ft. Sumpter Shelling as propaganda to drum up support for their position on the war and to drive up enlistment in the army that was going to end the war post haste.

It worked until the reality of war set in and the enlistments terms ran out, then both side started the draft of course.

In those days a lot of Americans were more loyal to their States than the Union. Even in the North. Their States voted to stay in the Union, and they fought for their States. It's one of the reasons for leniency after the war.
