In just one of many substantive actions Trump Admin took to address the border crisis and the flood of immigrants, they had a rule that immigrants who received food stamps (SNAP) or or Medicaid for 12 months out of 36 months would be ineligible for permanent residency.

"Trump administration officials said the rule was intended to protect taxpayers from bringing in more public charges from abroad and to make sure that immigrants coming to the U.S. legally are self-sufficient."

I thought this was an outstanding idea, and quite reasonable.

America welcomes legal immigrants with open arms, as long as they are law-abiding and can support themselves and eventually contribute to American society. The rule effectively gave immigrants a year to pull themselves up by their boot straps and find work. It encouraged the best and brightest to come to America.

"Under this proposed rule, we will return to the historical understanding of the term ‘public charge,’ and individuals will not be penalized for choosing to access the health benefits and other supplemental government services available to them," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said in a statement.

On Thursday, Biden Admin published their final rule which allows immigrants to use an array of expensive taxpayer-funded public benefits and not disqualify them from permanent residency. These include:

• SNAP/food stamps,
• Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP),
• most Medicaid benefits,
• housing benefits and
• transportation vouchers
• other "supplemental" or "special-purpose" benefits
