Okay, so I'm an old-fashioned kinda GI. To me, a uniform means just that as defined by Miriam Webster; 1. having always the same form, manner, or degree, 2. not varying or variable <uniform procedures, 3. consistent in conduct or opinion <uniform interpretation of laws, and 4. of the same form with others : conforming to one rule or mode.
It also defines it as dress of a distinctive design or fashion worn by members of a particular group and serving as a means of identification; broadly : distinctive or characteristic clothing.
In military terms, it means similar clothing to denote a specific military organization. So, in terms of uniformity, shouldn't we have all those wearing Sikh turbans in one military unit? Another for those wearing beards? And yet another for those wearing Yamulkes?
I spent too many years ensuring my brass was on correctly and my uniforms were sharply creased with highly-polished shoes so all members of my unit were uniform to be able to understand this trend towards letting anyone wear what they want!
