Austria passes new law on Islam, bans foreign funding

VIENNA: Austria’s parliament on Wednesday passed a controversial bill which bans Muslim organisations from receiving funds from foreign sources and requires imams to be able to speak German, BBC reported.

The bill, which amends the country’s century-old law on Islam, text aims to promote what conservative Integration Minister Sebastian Kurz calls an “Islam of European character” by muting the influence of foreign Muslim nations and organisations, and offering Austrian Muslims a mix of increased rights and obligations in practising their faith in the central European country.

Austria’s current “law on Islam” dates to 1912, after the annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina by the Austro-Hungarian empire.

The two-year-old bill before parliament predates the recent violence in France and Denmark but is designed to “clearly combat” the growing influence of radical Islam, Kurz said.

Earlier this month French Prime Minister Manuel Valls similarly raised the notion of banning foreign funding of Islamic organisations. Kurz says officials in Germany and Switzerland have also expressed interest in the bill.

Voting on the law comes amid estimates indicating around 200 people from Austria — including women and minors — have gone to Syria and Iraq to join militias like Islamic Front.

A poll published by the OGM institute Tuesday found 58 per cent of Austrians feeling radicalisation of the nation’s Muslims was underway.

To combat the rising risk of radical indoctrination of foreign origin, the legislation bans Islamic cultural organisations and imams in Austria from receiving funding from abroad.

It also requires the nearly 450 Muslim organisations in the country to demonstrate a “positive approach towards society and the state” in order to continue receiving official licensing.

Imams will be obliged to be able to speak German under the law — a bid to make their comments more accessible and transparent, while also facilitating the fuller integration of Islam into wider Austrian society.

“We want a future in which increasing numbers of imams have grown up in Austria speaking German, and can in that way serve as positive examples for young Muslims,” Kurz explained.

The legislation also accords Muslims the right to consult Islamic clerics on the staffs of hospitals, retirement homes, prisons and in the armed forces.

Muslims in Austria will also have the right to halal meals in those institutions as well as in public schools, and will be allowed to skip work on Islamic holidays.

The current text scales back farther-reaching measures contained in an earlier version, including the imposition of an “official” Quran in German that had sparked considerable controversy.

Yet the legislation has still sparked opposition.

Turkey’s leading Muslim cleric, Mehmet Gormez, decried the bill as “a 100-year regression,” arguing no complaints have ever been lodged about the fact that Turkey funds many imams in Austria.

The country’s main Islamic group, the Islamic Religious Authority of Austria, approved the bill despite other organisations denouncing its restrictions as “discrimination” that other religions aren’t saddled with.

Austria’s far-right Freedom Party, meantime, criticised the bill as insufficient in facing a rising threat, and dismissed it as a “placebo.”

Muslims make up roughly 560,000 of Austria’s total population of 8.5 million. Mist Austrian Muslims are of Turkish and Bosnian origin, as well as ethnic Chechens and Iranians.

I know. I mean what COMMIE BASTARDS would say this:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof"

Communists! That's who!

Ahm, Austria is full of bigots
Yes, which is exactly why Islamic Nazi bigots shouldn't be fucking with the Europeans who have a history of it, don't you think? All you need is a few more Charlie Hebdos or major terror attacks, and the crusades are on.

Ah, I see the Nazis have returned? So be it.
No actually it's the beginnings of the crusades that the Muslims keep begging for.
Why would you be keen to give the enemy what it wants / needs to thrive?
Thrive? The medieval crusades worked to rid Europe of the Muslim invaders, the 21st crusades will do the same.
Already tried that during the colonial era. Didn't work out too well for Europe.

Nah, the Crusades worked. They expelled the Muslim savage invaders from European Christian lands. Nobody is saying the Crusades were a great time in human history. But historical fact is historical fact.

I'm not so sure another Crusade is a bad idea
It won't be like the medieval crusades. More like what we see with Austria, targeting Muslims and immigrants. Openly passing legislation that is anti Islamic. In Italy, Islam is not even considered an official religion, due to oppression of women, therefore not tax deductible. Islam cannot coexist with Western values, that is a fact.

I guess that's why eastern Europe doesn't have a significant Muslim population.
It wasn't perfect, they couldn't save Eastern Europe, North Africa, and many Middle Eastern countries. But Western Europe was saved. I guess you would have liked all of Europe to be Muslim lands.

No, we need more voices like yours, who do not care how many innocent people die and are at constant risk because they do not agree with radical Islamists in their midst. Voices like yours that are only there to criticize the courage of others, but act so self-righteous with their pens.
