DETROIT – General Motors is laying off hundreds of salaried employees in its information technology operations as the automaker reevaluates its workforce needs and cuts costs, CNBC has learned.

The global reductions began Monday and will impact about 500 to 600 employees, largely in Austin, Texas, and Warren, Michigan, according to a person familiar with the plans who was not authorized to speak publicly about the layoffs.

GM confirmed the cuts, which were first reported by Bloomberg News, but declined to give specific details about the actions.

“GM is transforming its Information Technology organization to better position the company for the future. As part of that work, we have made the difficult decision to eliminate certain roles globally. We are grateful for the contributions of the employees affected and are committed to supporting them through this transition,” the automaker said in an emailed statement.

Huh, they should have learned to pipeline.....I hope they got shed of DEI dead weight. Likely they kept H1Bs.

That's sad news to read about. An additional 500-600 lost jobs on top of the 940 employees that went away less than 3 years ago back in 2023 when GM shut down its IT Innovation Center in Chandler, Arizona.

They (GM) ended their heavy Silverado line too.

GM Ends Heavy Silverado Medium-Duty Line

General Motors has announced it will end production of the Chevrolet Silverado 4500 HD, 5500 HD, and 6500 HD — the heavy-duty medium-duty (Class 4–6) trucks — at International Trucks’ Springfield, Ohio plant on September 30, 2026 Autoblog+1. This marks the conclusion of the current-generation Silverado MD program, which debuted in 2019 and was co-developed with International Motors.

Why Production Ends

  • Contract expiration: GM did not renew its manufacturing agreement with International Motors, which had built both the Silverado MD and International CV Series trucks at the Ohio plant Autoblog+1.
  • Declining sales: Chevrolet sold just 1,273 Silverado MD trucks in Q1 2026, down 37% from the same period in 2025, and 8,341 units in 2025 compared to 10,319 in 2024 Autoblog+1.
  • Economics: Medium-duty trucks are costly to redesign to meet evolving emissions, safety, and durability standards, and GM’s business case for a next-gen model was deemed unviable newestcarsusa.com.
  • Facility sale: International Motors is selling the Springfield plant to Canadian defense contractor Roshel, which plans to use it for commercial and armored vehicle production autoevolution.
