Police are searching for two masked suspects after a synagogue was set on fire in southeastern Australia early Friday in an attack condemned by the prime minister as an act of antisemitism.


Worshippers fled from the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne when the blaze took hold around 4 a.m. Friday morning. The synagogue regularly holds overnight prayers.


“There was banging on the door, some liquid was thrown inside and was lit alight. The few people inside the synagogue ran outside the back door. One of them got burned,” said a board member from the synagogue Benjamin Klein, speaking to national broadcaster the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Local police are now looking into overseas actors or individuals who may be behind antisemitic incidents in Australia. However, those who have been arrested so far are not Lebanese migrants.

A 33-year-old man was charged on Wednesday over an attempt to set fire to a synagogue earlier this month and he is a local man without any overseas links.

Australia's federal police have said they are investigating whether "overseas actors or individuals" are paying local criminals to carry out antisemitic crimes in the country.

Albanese said it appeared some of the crimes were "being perpetrated by people who don't have a particular issue, aren't motivated by an ideology, but are paid actors".

"Now, it's unclear who or where the payments are coming from," he told reporters on Wednesday.

The country's federal police says it will increase efforts to deal with surging anti-Jewish crimes.

These are government workers employed (not anymore) by New South Wales Health, a public hospital.

Many people have been arrested, and are in custody, "before the courts".

Everyone in Australia has "rights and liberties"...including the Jewish community.
This community deserves and is entitled to protection.
Said community is being terrorised physically and mentally purely because of their religion.
This is totally a crime, very clearly set out in law.
State govts have passed new laws re anti-Semitism. NSW state now has minimum mandatory prison sentences for such attacks/crimes.

The last thing Australia needs is *everyone" armed with hand guns and assault rifles
