The cousin of Syria President Bashar al Assad was killed in a skirmish with rebel forces near the Turkish border late Sunday, Syrian state media outlets reported.
The Syrian state news network announced that Halal al-Assad, cousin to the Syrian president and head of the so-called national defence brigade of the regime's military, was killed in clashes with armed groups in the Kassab region outside the coastal city of Lathakia.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed the report, claiming that al-Assad was killed along with 11 other regime officials during a battle with rebel and Islamist forces.
