After the Syrian rebels took control of Damascus and declared the overthrow of the Assad regime, they arrived today (Sunday) at the infamous Sidania prison in the Damascus area - and released women from it. However, footage showing a small child who was released with his mother and was also being held there, went viral on social media and aroused empathy around the world.
The Sidania prison operated by the Assad regime is notorious for its alleged extrajudicial executions of thousands of people. It was used to imprison thousands of prisoners, most of whom were opponents of the regime, political activists, and opposition figures.
The footage shows the rebels opening the cell in one of the wings and calling the prisoners to leave, urging them: "Come out, you have nothing to fear." At the same time, the little boy who was with them is also seen leaving and freeing himself from the walls of the horrific prison.
In 2017, the US State Department accused the Syrian regime of murdering thousands of prisoners and burning their bodies in a large crematorium in the suburbs of Damascus. A State Department official and senior diplomat for Middle East affairs told a briefing that 50 opposition prisoners were being hanged every day at the Sidnaya military prison.
The international human rights organization Amnesty International published a report on the prison that year, estimating that "between 5,000 and 13,000 people were extrajudicially executed in Saydania between 2011 and 2015," with the Syrian military police carrying out the mass hangings.
Syrian rebels have taken over additional prisons in Syria. Among other things, prisoners escaped from the "Palestine Branch" prison in Damascus, which is notorious as a place where Syrian intelligence used torture against regime opponents.
