Zone1 are Catholic churches open all day, but Protestant churches only during church services?

So it is in Germany.

How is it in the US .... or elsewhere?

Really depends on the church. Some Roman Catholic as well as Protestant churches have staff that lives on site and can keep an eye on it, as well as having daily prayer sessions.

Others don't, keeping the joint locked up makes sense.

Most Catholic churches are indeed open. Mine is open from 7AM to 7PM, with the exception of special events. All of the Catholic Churches in my area are open every day.

I have never tried to enter a Protestant church. Looking on Google Maps, all but two of the Lutheran churches that I looked up are open. Most of the Methodist and Baptist churches are open.

what surprised me about Protestant churches in Germany: Some ask for an entry fee, if they have works of art.
Catholic churches often have works of art, but would never ask for an entry fee.

Depends upon whose in charge of church. The only Catholic Church that I know that is open all day is St. Boniface in San Francisco's Tenderloin. The church remains open to allow the Homeless sleep in the pews.

That's unimaginable! Wonder how Christ would react!
